What’s The Best Mattress for Kids?

When most people think about sleep problems, they usually associate it with being older. It is common for people to forget or even not know that children realistically need even more sleep than adults. Pediatricians and sleep experts agree that quality sleep is essential for your child’s health throughout all the stages of childhood. When a child enjoys undisturbed sleep on a quality mattress, they awake with rejuvenated muscles and minds. If you want your children to be their best everyday, it is important that you consider the quality of the mattress they sleep on now. If it is not giving them the proper support and comfort that enables them to sleep soundly through the whole night, it may be time for a new one!

The amount of sleep a child needs depends upon their age. A newborn baby requires 10-18 hours of sleep per day. It is extremely important to have a supportive and comfortable crib mattress for babies in this age group. Once your child starts to crawl and is ready for a toddler bed the amount of sleep they need decreases to about 12-14 hours in a 24 hour period. Although toddlers don’t need as much sleep as infants, quality sleep on a comfortable mattress is still just as important. When children are ready for school, they don’t need so much sleep; however, the importance of them being well rested grows exponentially. The National Sleep Foundation found that 60% of children aged 4-12 complained of feeling tired during the school day. Kids in this age group do well with full or queen sized mattresses that give them room to grow and enjoy activities; such as, reading, talking on the phone and playing on their laptops.

Material- Children’s mattresses are available in Memory Foam, Latex and Traditional Innerspring just like mattresses for adults.

Size- Children’s mattresses come in sizes ranging from crib sized all they way up to a California King; however, the larger sized mattresses are not specifically made for kids. You can buy a regular “adult”  mattress as big as you like as your child gets older. Some of the smaller sized mattresses are reduced in height by 2 1/2″ making it easier for your child to get in and out of bed and are great for bunk beds or use with a protective railing.

Extras- Manufacturers like Serta offer mattresses adorned with loveable and familiar characters; such as, SpongeBob, Dora and Diego. Your child will love seeing their favorite cartoon character on their new bed helping them to enjoy bedtime!
