How to Choose the Right Mattress

Most of my customers call the office because they need a new mattress for their Master Bedroom and are inexperienced mattress shoppers.  They want to know what type of mattress will suit them best and what will provide the right type of comfort. Let’s face it, buying a mattress is confusing; you don’t see what is inside and most people who sell mattresses are not truly educated about the products they sell.  So people find my articles on the Internet and call my office for advice.

There are several coil systems in use today but the big brands are all using individual coils in their highest quality products. They know this type of mattress provides the right support for the majority of people who are over the age of forty.  They also know these customers, who have higher incomes and can afford good quality, will wake up more refreshed because of the independent back support built into the mattress and they build the mattress better to suit these customers.  Therefore my advice is to look with a mattress with individual support coils, or commonly called pocketed coils.  Mattresses with individual support will start around $600 for a queen.

The next important point is the comfort materials included within the mattress.  Again, the big manufacturers are pushing their air cooled memory foams and gel-memory foam mattresses.  These foams have a dual structure that allows air movement in the mattress so the temperature will stay regulated.  If you are older you may remember mattresses with a brass button sewn into the sides of the mattress.  That button had holes in it to allow air movement. Companies got away from that until after 2007 when the new fire retardant mattress laws came in being.  Once mattresses were made to be fire resistant the factory designers could go back to making a mattress that passed room temperature air in and out of the mattress.  Air movement is back but I am afraid the brass button is gone forever; today’s mattresses have a mesh built into the side that allows the air to pass through the mattress.

Finally the last point is to look for at least 800 coil densities in a mattress.  You could be good with less but having more is not going to hurt you.  Some all foam mattress without coils are fine but only if you are buying Tempur-Pedic, Stearns and Foster, iComfort, or ComforPedic.  I don’t trust the imports and this office gets too many calls from people that bought cheap mattresses made overseas to buy a replacement.  I also suggest getting at least a 20-year warranty.
