Two – Thirds of American don’t get a restful night’s sleep!

If you are having a tough time falling a sleep at night chances are you’re doing it on your side, in your pajamas and it’s between 10pm and 11pm on a Sunday! Yup! That’s Right…  According to a national sleep survey conducted by Costa Mesa CA. home furnishing retailer Anna’s Linens.

The Study Shows that 74% of American wear pajamas to bed (8% sleep naked just saying).  The same percentage sleep on their sides and 47% share a bed with someone that snores.

Nearly 2/3 say they get a “restful nights sleep” only 3 nights or fewer per week, 10% say the get a restful nights sleep every night and 1/4 say they sleep restfully 5 or 6 nights per week.

More than half of the respondents say they’re able to recall fewer than a quarter of their dreams, while about 10% are able to recall nearly all of their dreams from the previous nights.  Interestingly, nearly 70% report their dreams are not as interesting as their friend but 44 % admit their dreams are ” more bizarre’

Bariatric MattressIII

In the previous installments on the subject of bariatric mattresses, I discussed the obvious benefits of selecting a model with an extra heavy coil system from either the Simmons Beautyrest Black beds or the Stearns & Foster Estate series.  These are both high end products in terms of price, and as such, may be out of reach for some shoppers.  The basic Stearns & Foster Core Collection features an 825 coil (queen) unit in the entire lineup.  These springs are made of 13 3/4 gauge titanium alloy wire for solid, durable support.  Whether you select the Heidi Plush Euro Pillow-top, the Josette Ultra Firm Tight-Top, or any of the in between comfort levels, you’ll still have the benefit of some of the sturdiest coils available in any mattress.  The basic beds from Simmons are the Beautyrest Classic Recharge models.  Unlike the Stearns & Foster Core Collection mattresses, Simmons uses the lighter 15.5 gauge wire in their plush tight-top and pillow-top beds, so if you want the stronger 13 3/4 gauge coils, go with either the extra firm or the luxury firm offerings.   Unlike many other sites, provides complete manufacture’s specifications for every mattress we feature, so you can compare the different models and know what your buying.  We can also help in matching up the names of different mattress for you.  Just write or give us a call.

New Mattress Smell

A lady wrote us the other day asking how long a “new mattress smell” will last.  She swore it was the memory foam that was the source of the odor.  That may have been the case, since most mattresses have some memory foam in them, but there are so many other different padding materials in a mattress, I don’t know how anyone could localize the origin of the emanation.

Many new items  (car, sofa, carpets, drapes, etc.) will have that aroma of “newness” for a few days.  That’s been my experience with new bedding, but it usually dissipates within a day or two.  I’ve spent many days in bedding stores over the past 13 years.  At the moment, I’m in our store among among no less than 70 sleep sets.  The day before yesterday, we placed about a dozen brand new pieces in the showroom, however, the place doesn’t smell any different today than it did last week.  I’ve never had a customer walk in here, wrinkling her nose, or wheezing and gasping for breath.

That being said, we do receive that rare phone call the day after delivery from someone remarking about the odor of their new sleep set.  Always, we advise them to crack open a window in their bedroom for a day or two, which usually does the trick.  In extremely, and I really mean extremely rare instances, we have had to swap-out a mattress for that customer who is hypersensitive to the new bedding odor.  In all my years in the bedding business, I can remember doing this in less than a handful of cases, but it always solved the problem.

Folks, you can rest assured that your purchase from will not antagonize your nose if you simply follow the above steps, and it will provide years of restful sleep.

I need a mattress for my kid , any suggestions ?

It amazes me how often someone comes in our store looking for the cheapest mattress they can find for their child. To all the parents out there , you are doing more harm than good simply by trying to save a few dollars. I am not saying you have to spend thousands of dollars for your child’s mattress, but at least you want a mattress with a good support system that will keep them in alignment as their bones are developing. Too often we say “oh it’s for my kid it really doesn’t matter” but your child’s development years are the most important of all. Take a look at the following mattress sets to consider for your child, they are all good quality mattresses that will provide the support needed for your child’s development without breaking the bank.

Hotel Mattresses – I always sleep great at a Hotel – How can I get the same mattress

I often get a call from a client who tells me that they stayed at a top-notch hotel and they loved the mattress. Some of the hotels even give you the opportunity to buy the same bed – new version of course – and get it delivered to your home.  The price is usually well above what we sell the same mattress for, plus we offer white glove delivery service included with our price.

Here are the key reason you sleep so well at a quality hotel.

1. You are generally exhausted after a long and trying day of travel.

2. The linens, pillows and coverlets are extremely luxurious.

3. The mattress is usually less that 3 – 5 years old.  Most 5 star hotels change mattresses every few years.

4. The room is usually very dark and quite, and you know you won’t have to make the bed in the morning. 🙂

Simmons Beautyrest make a series of Hospitality beds which are only slightly different from the ones we sell.  Usually the difference is the cover is less eye appealing and it is treated with stain resistant products to keep it free from becoming unsightly.

Sealy and Serta beds are also available, the one version commonly found in the Raddison Chain are the Sleep Number beds at that are the air mattresses.  We do not sell those beds and our experience tells us that many purchasers of those beds have buyers remorse after about a month on one of those beds.

If you fall in love with the mattress you slept on in the hotel.  Take off the bottom sheet and mattress pad, look for the manufactures label and the law tag on the bed.  Share that information with me and I’ll be able to determine which bed you love.  Let us quote you on the price and you’ll find that we will be the least expensive option to buy the bed you love and offer you the best service in getting a wonderful nights sleep.

Be prepared to spend some serious cash on the Luxury Items – Coverlets, high thread count – high quality cotton sheets, and a soft, lightweight, thermal type blanket that will help keep you warm when its cold, and cool when its hot.

Foods that help you sleep

GTM_Generic_Img_4Web MD has some great information today on helpful sleeping hints.  Here are some of the hight points from the article today.

Tryptophan is a sleep-promoting substance and tryptophan foods can help you if you are having difficulty sleeping.  Milk and dairy foods contain tryptophan as do honey, eggs, bananas and seeds and nuts.  Compliment tryptophan rich foods with a carbohydrate and a snack to help you sleep.  Keep your bedtime snack small.  To heavy a snack will tax your digestive system.  A great night-time snack might be a bowl of cereal with milk, crackers and yogurt or cheese and crackers.

Avoid the following if you are having difficulty sleeping at night.

1. Caffeine   Cut all caffeine 4 to 6 hours before bed time.  Be aware that caffeine can be hidden in over the counter medicines such as cough syrup, diuretics etc.  Read the labels.  Some of these product have as much caffeine as a cup of coffee.

2. Alcohol:  Avoid alcohol 4 to 6 hours before bed time.

3. Spicy Foods:  If you can  finish a heavy meal at least 4 hours before bed time.

4. Fluids: Try to cut fluids by 8 pm.  Getting up during the night to use the bathroom will interrupt sleep.

5. Nicotine:  Nicotine is a stimulant.  Nicotine has the same effects similar to caffeine.  Avoid smoking before  bed time.

Please read on from WebMD The Benefits of a Good Nights Sleep.  Great suggestions to help you if you are having interrupted sleep.  Often times just changing a few habits can help with sleep.

Does body weight matter when selecting a mattress?

GTM_Generic_Img_3A very good question sent to us by Tom in NY.  Body weight is a consideration when purchasing a new mattress no matter what age.  Body weight is also a consideration whether you sleep on your back, side or stomach.  Your weight and body shape can impact how a mattress performs.  The goal is to select a mattress that will comfortably conform to each individual allowing them to sleep through the night for many years.

You want good support for spine alignment in any mattress selected and enough padding in the top to relieve pressure on sensitive areas no matter what position you sleep in.  A mattress needs to support your body in a neutral position supporting your spine where the curvature of the spine supports buttocks, shoulders, head and heels.

A mattress that is too firm will actually push back on those main pressure point areas and one that is too soft will not properly support those pressure point areas.

For stomach and back sleepers a firm or luxury firm tight top or pillow top is usually recommended.

For a side sleeper we usually recommend the plush or ultra plush level in the tight top or pillow top and for anyone who sleeps in multiple sleeping positions we suggest you begin with the middle comfort plush level.

It is best you try these comfort choices in your local store and see which supports your individual body shape and weight.

If you can shop with someone you trust who can observe that the mattress is supporting you in a neutral spine position.  Be sure you let them observe you in each position you sleep in.

The Right Pillow Makes a Difference

When most people think about what is important in order to get a good night’s sleep, they automatically place the responsibility solely on the mattress. A great quality mattress is important, but what most people tend to forget is that the right pillow can be crucial in helping you achieve a good nights sleep.  Pillows not only impact the quality of your sleep but also how healthfully we rest.  Choosing the wrong pillow can add to neck pain, discomfort, arm and shoulder numbness and can affect snoring. Mattresses can often be very pricey, but a good pillow is attainable no matter what your budget may be! A common misconception is that all pillows are the same; basically, if you’ve seen one pillow you’ve seen them all. This could not be further from the truth. The goal of selecting a pillow is to help your head remain in a neutral alignment throughout the night, which means your head is aligned squarely with your shoulders.  There should be no bending back too far or reaching to far forward. The right pillow can promote this healthy head and neck position and greatly increase the quality of your sleep.

Jen from Delaware writes: I love my new Simmons Beautyrest Black and Beyond Mattress!

Simmons MattressesA good night’s sleep is absolutely crucial in order to be fully productive during the day. It has been reported that some 70 Million people in the US suffer from some sort of sleep problem and the effects of this sleep loss on work performance is currently costing employers an astonishing $18 Billion in productivity. Sleep experts recommend that the average adult get a minimum of seven hours of sleep every night; however, the average adult in America  averages  slightly less than the recommended amount. There are several medical conditions that can contribute to this loss of sleep, but many people don’t realize the important role your mattress plays. We receive feedback from our customers all of the time telling us how their new mattress saved them from  sleep deprivation. Jen from Delaware writes :
