I have been sleeping on a Simmons Beautyrest World Class mattress for the past few years, and it was quite enjoyable. I was sleeping on a top level world class mattress equivalent to the Simmons Beautyrest World Class Trident, and it had provided me years of excellent comfort and great nights sleep.

I decided I wanted to try a memory foam mattress, so I ordered a Simmons ComforPedic Renewed Energy, which is a plush model of the Simmons ComforPedic line, I took delivery of my new mattress yesterday and had my first nights sleep on it. I have to say, it was the best nights sleep I have gotten in years. The mattress conforms to your body and relives pressure points in my back, hips, neck and shoulders.

The combination of AirCool memory foam and the TruTemp gel is noticeable, I am a very hot sleeper, and I slept cool and refreshed all night. The difference between an innerspring and a memory foam is quite noticeable as well, this was my first memory foam mattress and I am more than thrilled about the decision I made. I personally recommend this bed to anyone, and I back it not just by facts and specifications, but I spent my own money on it, and am absolutely happy with what I have received.

What Does “Coil Density” Mean?

Annette from Duluth wrote to ask, “what does coil density mean?”  You may remember when you were little having your mother, in addition to admonishing you to “keep your shoes off the bed, also insisting that you never sit on the edge of the mattress.  The reason why is because the old style mattresses of yore didn’t have anything in the way of edge support, so if you spent a lot of time perched on the edge, it would eventually crush down.  Back then, some of the better mattresses had “butterfly” border braces installed along the edge of the coil unit to keep it nice and firm; and they worked reasonably well.  Somewhere along in the 90s, Stearns & Foster, the Cadillac of mattresses, developed a new kind of edge support.  It was a “hot poured, cold cured”  epoxy-like encasement which surrounded all four sides of the mattress, thus providing support for the entire perimeter.  Several years later, when virtually all mattresses became “non-flip,” (padded on only one side) this system didn’t meld well with the new design, so the folks with the pocket protectors and lab coats came up with a system of inserting rigid strips of very stiff Styrofoam-like planks near the edges of the coils unit just inside the first row of springs.  Again, this design worked fairly well, except the rigid inserts were too stiff, so that when you sat on the edge of the mattress, it felt like sitting on the edge of a bucket, with the edge supports cutting into the backs of your thighs.  Today, nearly every quality, name-brand, innerspring mattress has a less rigid, three inch wide band of high density foam that completely wraps around the coil unit. And this is where the term “coil density” comes into play.  In order to maintain a standardized mattress size, some coils have to be removed in order to accommodate the three inches of edge supporting foam.  Coil density is an honest way of expressing the number springs that would have been in the mattress before some were taken out to make room for the foam encasement; not the actual number of springs.  Not only does this system maintain the integrity of the edge, but it also stabilizes the mattress, so that there’s less side-to-side movement, plus a supported edge provides an additional useable sleeping area, since you can creep out to the very edge, without feeling like you’ll roll out of the bed.  Please visit gotomattress.com for the absolute lowest prices on premium, name-brand bedding…delivered free almost anywhere, tax-free!  Or call us, (we love phone calls) at 1-800-385-8319.

                    

Selecting a Mattress set

In addition to the work I do for gotomattress.com, I also have spent nearly 20 years assisting mattress shoppers in showrooms in selecting selecting a mattress set.  Many customers approach this important task with fear and loathing.  I can’t say who many times they’ve remarked, “this is worse than shopping for a car!”  Many of them make this far more complicated than need be through a lack of preparation and inaccurate information, usually obtained from the Internet or a cautionary tale from a friend or relative.  So do a little homework before setting out for the stores.  Ask your friends and family about their mattress shopping experience and their level of satisfaction with their selection of store and product.  Collect a few ads from the newspaper to familiarize your self with prices, and yes, they’ll be higher than they were when you bought your last mattress set 15 years ago.  Don’t be drawn in by the $399 queen set, even if it’s a name brand, unless you want it for display to fill the bedroom of a house you’re planning to sell, or you want to donate it to a charity.  These “come-on” beds simply will not provide any level of every night support, comfort or durability.   Figure on realistically spending around $600 or more for a decent, name-brand, approaching premium quality sleep set, with a 20 year warranty.  An excellent choice of a gentle-firm, well made, basic mattress set would be our Simmons Beautyrest Classic Recharge Miki Plush.  It’s made in only this one comfort level (no Ultra Plush or Extra-Firm, etc.).  We will deliver it for free almost anywhere in the continental US…Tax-free!  This same bed is shown under various other names, a common one being the Apache Plush, usually for another $100 or more.  The value in this sleep set is that since it’s an opening level Simmons Beautyrest Classic Recharge model, it shares all the same core construction features as the more expensive Classic Recharge sets.  Same Triton foundation (box), same 800 pocketed coil unit, foam encased for edge support and Simmons’ Air Cool technology for cooler sleep.  As you move up the line to the higher priced Classic Recharge beds, you’re simply buying the additional layers of padding and upholstery needed to create additional comfort choices such as the Extra Firm, the Luxury Firm, the Plush and the Luxury Firm and Plush Pillow-Tops.  Simply by knowing that the coil height (tallness) is eight inches, it’s easy to determine how much padding is on the mattress.  The total height of the Miki is eleven inches.  That’s three inches of padding layers over the springs.  The most highly upholstered, luxurious mattress in the Classic Recharge line is the Simmons Beautyrest Classic Recharge Tysons Corner Plush Pillow-Top with five inches of better, more expensive padding materials.  We have it in queen for $1228 for the queen size set.  Bottom line:  As you step up the line, you’re purchasing additional, and better quality padding.  This is the case with every manufacturer’s line.  Not complicated at all!
