The National Sleep Foundation’s 2012 Bedroom Poll asked Americans what the key elements to a good night’s sleep were. They found  that most Americans are taking control of their bedrooms and the poll said their bedrooms were better than most quality hotels.  Important elements included Pillows, quiet room, mattresses, and sheets.

Love Memory Foam But I Sleep Hot!

Linda called and wanted information about our Memory Foam Mattresses.

Facts You Need to Know About Sleep!

Sleep can be broken down into 2 major classifications and 5 stages.  The 2 stages are REM and Non-REM( rapid eye movement). The type of mattress you are sleeping on affects the amount of quality sleep you are getting. You will see why it is so important to sleep on a great mattress and improve your quality sleep!

First, let me give you some examples of Non-REM (stages 1-4).

Stage 1 is  transition from wakefulness to sleep, we call this the lights are on but no ones home.  Have you ever been reading a book finished the page and don’t recall anything you just read?  That’s stage 1.

Stage 2 is light sleep you are easily awoken and movement occurs.

Stage 3 is the transition from light sleep to deep sleep.  This is when the physical restoration of the body begins.

Stage 4 is deep sleep when most of the body’s growth, healing and physical restoration occurs, very little movement.

REM sleep (rapid eye movement)

Stage 5 is the last stage and is refered to as dream state.  Increases in brain activity, heart rate and body temperature occur. Also, the most active stage of sleep, voluntary muscles are paralyzed.

The most restorative stages of sleep are 4 and 5.  Sleep stages run in cycles and the average adult will complete 4 to 5, 90 min cycles per night.  REM gets longer and more intense with each successive cycles ( as little as 5 min-up to 1 hour) . Proportionally, you spend more time in the deep sleep and REM sleep in the last 2 hours of an 8 hour sleep session.  So you can see why it’s important to get 8 hours of sleep per night.

Keep this in mind,when you toss and turn and it takes some time to fall a sleep, you don’t lose the 1st hour of sleep, you lose the LAST hour of sleep and that happens to be the most restorative.  So make sure you find a mattress that helps you fall a sleep quickly and in turn you will be better rested.
